Arthur Erickson

West Coast architecture is a facet of Modern architecture that began to take shape in Canada during the 1950’s.  The trademark of West Coast construction lies within both the materials used and the home's physical setting.  These houses often feature natural materials such as wood and concrete, open beams, ceramic or slate tile, brick, and granite. They also place focus on creating unique layouts and interesting design compositions.

Another typical feature of West Coast homes is creating an abundance of natural light from carefully placed windows.  These homes are nestled into the natural environment and are one with the land.  In Canada, the most influential architect in forging the “West Coast style” was Vancouver’s Arthur Erickson.  Erickson designed several distinct homes up and down North America's western coast including a couple of houses in Kelowna, BC.  His houses are valued most notably for their intimate feel and integration of the natural setting.
