Popular Features of Modern Bathrooms

Natural Materials

Encouraged in part by the current trend towards Green and eco-friendly resources in home design, many homeowners are opting for designs inspired by a more natural palette. Woods, bamboo, slate and tile, and fresh colours are popular choices in modern bathroom design. Colder minimalist styles are being infused with warmth by bringing in natural materials. Lighting and fixtures are taking on more organic shapes inspired by lines from nature. Colours are being selected from natural colour schemes; colours like earth greens and browns, blues, and greys are popular.

Contemporary Colour Schemes

Modern colour palettes in the bathroom are showing close ties to nature. Stone greys, soft sky blues, grassy greens, and natural woods are popular. Black and white is taking a step back and are being used as accent colours. Metallics are also used as accents to create that feeling of shine and elegance. Colour palettes are becoming more elaborate, with many tones and textures used in the space.

Eco-Friendly Options

Bathrooms that function efficiently and intelligently are the trend right now. Water and energy saving options are being selected to help save on energy bills and shows how homeowners are becoming increasingly educated about the benefits of going Green. Low flush toilets, water-conserving low flow shower heads and faucets, eco-friendly flooring (such as bamboo, readily a renewable resource), and low-toxicity paint (such as those with a clay base) are exciting developments in Green bathroom design. Ventilation and air quality has improved with the latest overhead bathroom fans; they are quieter and more powerful than older designs.

Antique Fixtures and Furniture

If contemporary finishes are not your style, antique-inspired design is popular with designers as well. Antique bathroom cabinetry typically boasts an ornate, elegant design. Antique metals are typically warmer, with lots of dark copper tones and browns. Look for fixtures and knobs in a warmer metallic finish or in black. Carved wooden shelves, antique furniture, and claw-footed tubs are great additions to your bathroom design. Mirrors with multi-leveled bevelled edges and carvings make a statement in the space. For this particular style, look for softer colour palettes and neutral paint on the walls. Beiges, off-whites, and softer yellows will really make your more ornate, antique pieces stand out. Avoid patterned and textured walls, as they will make the space feel visually crowded.

Modern Accessories and Fixtures

Installing the latest contemporary designs and choosing modern materials will give your bathroom an updated, fresh look. If you are interested in a more modern aesthetic, shop around for some of the newer, exciting styles and trends in bathroom accessories and fixtures. Modern vanities with elegant sinks and faucets will immediately give your bathroom a contemporary feel. Newer designs showcase the sink and faucet in a sculptural sense. Sinks can be undermounted or raised about the countertop. Faucets come in a huge variety of designs; the trend is away from standard shapes and designers are using more elegant faucets. Consider installing a tall faucet adjacent to the sink - modern sinks can be purchased without the attachment hole for the faucet. The simplicity of this look is in line with the new modern look.

Stainless steel, brushed nickel, and chrome are all modern metal choices. Glass and wood accessories and shelving is currently huge in the bathroom design industry, with buyers looking to achieve the new natural palette. Modern mirrors, sometimes framed, are showing how bathroom design is slanting towards a luxurious or spa feel. Furniture is being introduced into the bathroom space, as bathrooms are growing in size to accommodate the trend towards a spa-like atmosphere. Large windows, modern structural elements, and elaborate lighting are being incorporated as well.

Contemporary Showers

If you're starting from scratch, consider investing in your shower. Modern showers have come a long way in design and function. Walk-in showers with floor-to-ceiling tile are a luxury in any home. Showerheads come in a huge variety of designs; some offer a rainwater-like experience with a huge showerhead positioned on the shower's ceiling. Showers can also be designed with multiple showerheads that hit the body from all angles. Modern showers can provide spinal and foot massaging jets.

Tiling your shower is a popular trend, as tiles come in a wide variety of colours, finishes, and sizes. Many designers add border tiles or accent tiles in a tinted glass or mosaic.

Energy and water-saving options are available; look for low-flow showerheads. Invest in eco-friendly materials. Showers can also have built-in LED lighting to enhance the atmosphere of the space. Glass, stone, and tile are easy to clean and ward off bacteria and mould if installed correctly.
